Sushi Dog Food: "Spiny's Silver Bullet"
Story of Food:
Choosing what food item to make my paw soosh was very difficult for me, since I don’t have any foods that are exactly special to me, so instead, (with permission), I wanted to base my paw soosh on something from my childhood that helped shape who I am today; my first childhood pet that I was solely responsible for, a juvenile dinosaur bichir named Spiny. I remember being completely obsessed with Spiny when I first got them, picking out tank decor excitedly thinking about what kind of things a “dinosaur fish” would like in their tank, the experience of getting a fish as a kid was magical to me. I genuinely loved watching Spiny explore their fish tank. Unfortunately, I was a young kid at the time, and I wasn’t educated on proper fish maintenance, and I failed Spiny in many different ways than one, and even though Spiny didn’t have the best care they should have had, I always hold Spiny in my heart as the fish that really kicked off my love for “unusual” pets. I wanted this sushidog to be a homage to Spiny, hence the theme being “Spiny’s Silver Bullet”, a silver bullet is a type of cocktail, it has a silver glittery sheen that reminds me of them, and I think it’s the best beverage to represent Spiny. I know I can never go back and redo what I did for Spiny, but I still want to cherish what Spiny did for me, they started me down the path of learning about animals, and what it means to be responsible for the well being of an animal, even something as seemingly small as a fish. There is a lot more I could say about Spiny, and what this soosh represents and means to me, but I do want to keep it short so you don’t have to read a million paragraph essay on why my childhood fish meant a lot to me. Sushi Dog Food: Assorted Teas

Growing up in Hong Kong, tea has been an integral part of my culture. There is a Chinese saying that tea is one of the seven necessities of life, and to me, it was definitely true. Going to Cantonese teahouses for morning tea and dim sum is a staple for weekends, preparing tea for guests is an expected gesture, and receiving tea as a gift from visiting relatives is a common occurrence. Perhaps due to aIl of this, I have become an absolute tea fanatic since a young age.
And as I grew older, I became increasingly interested in tea. I took every opportunity I could find to try out different kinds of teas, from the usual leaf-based teas, to soothing floral teas, to refreshing fruit teas. It is difficult to say what my favourite tea is - each blend has its own charm I find hard to dismiss. Oftentimes, I find myself standing in the tea aisle of the supermarket, spending ungodly amounts of time trying to decide what tea I should purchase next. It was when I first visited a tea specialist store that the solution was finally presented to me, as I took note of the boxes containing an assortment of teas.
Therefore, assorted teas, as a whole, represents my experiences with tea, especially the fact that I simply cannot seem to choose a favourite tea! The selection of different tea blends is simply a blessing for an indecisive soul like myself - though it’s debatable if it’s simply delaying the time of decision.

Sushi Dog Food: Rainbow Pride Cake
Story of Food: Rainbow Pride Cake was a desert made at a cookout before my first year attending a Pride event. My identity is important and going for my first time was celebrated.

The cake itself was lemon with rainbow icing, with star sprinkles in the buttercream. It was a beautiful cake made by wonderful people so I wanted my PAW Soosh to reflect this wonderful memory.

I wish I had gotten a picture of the cake before it was cut and absolutely demolished at the cookout but I didn't have the foresight. I still remember how it looked and tasted, as well as the happiness that tends to surround good food.

My first Pride was a success even if the day had to be cut short due to the heat. I met a lot of genuine people living their authentic selves and the air of the event was celebratory, very happy. I hope to attend another next year with people who are special to me.

Perhaps I can make another Rainbow Pride Cake and pass on the tradition? Until I know for sure, I am certain this Soosh would be a great reminder of this special time.

As seen in the design, I used the lemon cake as the main color scheme with the rainbow icing limited to just the tail. The star markings and sprinkles were worked in as well. I plan to give this Soosh so many traits and a makeover in the future but for now, here is Rainbow Pride Cake’s staple form with much love.

Sushi Dog Food: Inari (fox) Sushi

I chose Inari Sushi, otherwise known as fox sushi as my important food. Inari sushi was the first sushi type item that I was introduced to that got me into eating sushi. Its importance can be seen in both the past and the present.

I was introduced to Inari sushi by my first queer relationship. They are Korean adopted into an American family and had a special love for sushi. We would get off the bus together at their stop, where they would make Inari fresh and homemade, with a dipping sauce concoction that I don’t remember all the ingredients to. In order to get my first ever kiss, I was encouraged to learn how to use chopsticks properly which has served me into the present and future. This person also played a big role in me exploring my gender to discover that I did not align with my sex assigned at birth. Turns out neither of us did, I found out a few years ago.

In the present, being introduced to sushi via a cooked, non fish based roll allowed me to establish a love for sushi and ease my way into other sushi types. Without this love, there would be a big gap in connection with my wife. My wife’s favorite food and safe food is sushi, she is the type of person who would absolutely eat sushi every single day if allowed. Without Inari sushi to teach me there was more than just raw fish rolls, I never would have explored sushi options nor would I know how to use chopsticks.

For Tenko’s design, I used some motifs from research about the deity Inari. Inari among other representations is the primary protector of rice cultivation whos name can mean rice-bearer. These tofu pockets filled with rice were assumed to be a favorite food for foxes that lingered around rice fields. The foxes were seen as messengers and envoys to the deity Inari, the food offered to the foxes was seen as a way to receive blessings of prosperity and fertility from Inari through her messengers. Inari was most often depicted with a white fox or kitsune (spirit fox).

Sushi Dog Food: Chocolate Cheesecake

Cheesecake has been a favorite food of mine for ages. Every year when my birthday or whenever holidays or special events roll around, I normally treat myself to at least a slice of cheesecake. The traditional graham cracker crust is also buttery and delicious but can be substituted in some recipes. The fact that it can come in so many different variations make it all the better as well: adding fruits, nuts, caramel, or in this case, chocolate.
I personally have a large sweet tooth and chocolate is a personal favorite of mine as well, specifically milk chocolate out of the major types. The only problem with these two foods is they aren’t the best for you and are only to be had as occasional treats… that and they can be expensive when they are quality. When it comes to cheesecake, I love eating it whenever I can, but only in moderation. The rich and creamy flavor is addictive but can also be too much after a bit.
I chose Chocolate Cheesecake specifically to mix the two favorites and also because I love brown designs. This design is loosely inspired by my personal sona actually and the green of the bow is my favorite color!
Overall, I love cheesecake. I wish I could bake it more but with my schedule at the moment I’m unable to. I also lack self control when it’s in the house and find myself nibbling on it throughout the night. Maybe I’ll have to make some here soon in celebration of this soosh eh?
